Andhra Pradesh
Highlights: The
capital city of Hyderbad is one of India's largest hi-tech cities
and is quickly earning the name of "Cyberbad." The city
is also known for its great bazaars and lavish mosques. I'll also
be visiting the Sri Kalahasteeswara temple, one of the temples of the five
elements of my pilgrimage.
Dates: January
2000
Travelogue: This
area will be live when there are dispatches, photographs, audio,
and video available.
A little background:
Andhra Pradesh is so named
for their ancient people called the Andhras who populated South
India since before the 2nd century BC. Monsoons destroy much of
this state each year, and the dry Deccan plateau also deters travelers.
The Tirumala area is an extremely important pilgrimage center, and
is busier than Jerusalem and Mecca, even Rome, in the numbers of
visitors. The government is actively developing the state's hi-tech
industry, and there is even a movement to create electronic voting
centers, even though much of the state is illiterate and computer-illiterate.
