Day 6 (Thursday: January 13, 2000)

Mamallapuram's shore temple, the only "undrowned" temple left to tour.

The shore temple here in Mamallapuram is only one of 7 that were built centuries ago - this temple was the furthest north, the other temples are "drowned" and you can go in a boat to see the tops of them if you like. Just a few years ago the sea was lapping at the base of this temple but India decided to put a protective jetty around it. They also fenced it in so that you can't stroll right onto it from the beach, but have to detour through town and a gauntlet of trinket shops to get to the entrance gate.
