Mamallapuram's
shore temple, the only "undrowned" temple left to tour.
The
shore temple here in Mamallapuram is only one of 7 that were built
centuries ago - this temple was the furthest north, the other temples
are "drowned" and you can go in a boat to see the tops of them if
you like. Just a few years ago the sea was lapping at the base of
this temple but India decided to put a protective jetty around it.
They also fenced it in so that you can't stroll right onto it from
the beach, but have to detour through town and a gauntlet of trinket
shops to get to the entrance gate.
