Harvest
Time in the Country
The roads in
the countryside are full of activity. It's harvest time, and the
streets are covered in hay for threshing by the wheels of traffic.
Everyone is busy, even the sacred cows are harnessed and pulling
carts full of hay and sugarcane. Water buffalo pull through rice
fields, and people sort, shift, pull, and plant. This woman was
one of many standing in the road, separating the wheat from the
chaff in this timeless method, sprinkling it high from a woven basket
and letting the breeze take the chaff away. Later, the wheatberries
will be spread out on the asphalt and marked off by rocks or wood
so that traffic doesn't run over it.
