Day 27 (February 3, 2000)

The beach at Varkala is backed by a high cliff lined with tourist-friendly shops and restaurants nestled in the coconut palms. Some people come for a cheap yoga vacation in a meditative surroundings, some come to party, others come for the 5000 year old Aryuvedic treatments, including massage, that originated here in Kerala. Some come for all of it. Varkala is a colorful place and it's the "new Kovalam." Kovalam is considered spoiled now, in the opinion of many, due to the proliferation of mass tourism efforts there. Varkala is still very much a hippie haven. The beach is just difficult enough to get to (steep staircases cut into the cliffs) to keep away the throngs seeking effortless door-to-beach access. I am very much enjoying floating in the Arabian sea, which is very salty and very warm!
