32 (February 8, 2000)
In Periyar
Wildlife Sanctuary tourists go wild over birds, deer, and boar.
Only two shadowy elephants were visible (barely) in the tall grass,
but a small drama unfolded: by the water's edge, a pack of wild
dogs were stalking a Sambar deer fawn standing by its mother's side.
But a big buck with lots of horns stood between his family and the
dogs who hovered near the trees, pacing and watching for opportunity.
We floated by before the conclusion. The boat ride was 2 hours and
we got about an hour of hard rain during that time. This morning's
motorcycle ride from sea level to these mountains was a study in
microclimates, and the most beautiful motorcycle ride so far. Think
Blue Ridge Mountains, tropical foliage, and a decent road winding
along.
